Sometimes you see a necklace that immediately catches your eye. The shape, the links, and the way it drapes across the neck make it truly special. To make a necklace truly stand out, the right length is crucial.
Because every piece of jewelry is unique, you want to be sure the necklace fits comfortably and falls in the desired position. Fortunately, you can easily determine the correct chain length at home. Use the methods below to discover which length suits you best.
Measuring an existing chain
Are you wearing a necklace that's the exact length you like? You can use it as a handy guideline to determine your ideal necklace length.
Step 1: Choose a necklace that you like
Take a necklace that is comfortable to wear and grab a measuring tape or ruler.
Step 2: Measure the length of the chain
Place the chain closed and straight on a flat surface.
Measure the total length from the clasp to the end of the chain and note the number of centimeters.
Step 3: Determine the desired length
The length you measured gives a good indication of your ideal chain size. If you're around 45 cm, then 44, 45, or 46 cm will be practically the same.
Example
If you measure 45 cm in length, a necklace measuring 44, 45, or 46 cm will fit nicely and similarly.
Determine chain length without chain
Don't have a chain handy but want to know what length suits you best? You can easily measure it yourself.
Step 1: Decide where you want the chain to fall
Use a measuring tape or a piece of string and drape it loosely around your neck. Let the string hang down to where you'd like to wear the necklace.
Step 2: Measure the length
Remove the measuring tape or string and measure the length in centimeters with a ruler.
Step 3: Choose the correct chain size
The measured length gives a good indication of the necklace size that fits you comfortably. Are you unsure between two sizes? Lengths that differ by 1–2 cm usually fit more or less the same.
Example
If you're about 45 cm tall, a 44, 45, or 46 cm necklace will fit nicely and similarly.
